Phil MacAulay’s Legacy of Service and Community in Calgary
I had the honour of rising to recognize the life and legacy of Phil MacAulay, longtime President of Calgary’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 1. Phil, who passed away on June 11th, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service and dedication, and his loss is deeply felt across our community. For more than 50 years, he devoted himself to the Legion—supporting veterans, strengthening community ties, and ensuring that Branch No. 1 remained a vibrant and welcoming place in the heart of Calgary, where remembrance and camaraderie could continue to thrive for future generations.
Phil was a proud Naval veteran whose commitment to service never wavered. Over the years, he served two decades as Branch President and was awarded the Legion’s Meritorious Service Medal—an honour that reflects the respect he earned from those around him. I always appreciated Phil’s humour, his generosity, and his steadfast belief that the Legion must continue to evolve while staying true to its core mission of remembrance and support for veterans.
I will personally miss seeing Phil at Remembrance Day ceremonies and Legion events, where he was a constant and reassuring presence. My thoughts are with his wife Sue, who continues her own important work at Branch No. 1, as well as with his family and friends. As we reflect on Phil’s life, I hope we all carry forward his deep commitment to service, remembrance, and community.
