On Monday Dec 16, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will show us her Fall Economic Statement. Her own fiscal guardrail is a deficit of $40.1 billion, but analysts including the Parliamentary Budget Officer think she’ll blow right through that guardrail.
Former Liberal Advisor Robert Asselin cautions that you can’t just keep missing your own upper limit, and then upping it again. He also says Canada’s growing debt is limiting the government’s ability to respond to future economic challenges. I agree with that.
